What We Do
At Canyon River Ranch, we use highly individualized therapeutic interventions to empower youth to change their lives for the better. We feel that changing the thinking and behaviors that lead to poor choices is the key to getting better results. We focus on helping our clients identify what is important to them as individuals, and what they truly want out of life. We teach our youth to focus on their goals in order to lead happy and healthy lives.
One of the things we have discovered with youth is teaching them how to change their lives for the better starts by helping them understand how to make key choices in life. Using therapeutic interventions, we are able to empower youth to change their lives for the better. We find that changing the thinking behaviors that caused the youth to make poor choices will help them avoid such choices in the future. Our goal is to focus on helping our clients identify what is most important to them as individuals, and help them to understand what they truly want out of life.
Evidence Based Practice
Canyon River Ranch in Ogden uses an Evidence Based Practice (EBP) model. An EBP model is designed to help youth understand the decision-making process that leads to measurable outcomes in their lives. We apply our knowledge in this field by determining the best treatments and interventions based on the struggle that individual is facing. As we commonly work with high-risk behavioral youth, we find EBP allows us to understand the youth and bring them back to an understanding of the impact of their behavior and decisions. We are certified in EBP and it has been proven to reduce criminal behavior. Our highly-trained team of professionals works on creating an emerging program designed to create the most-critical outcomes for troubled youth including; safety, well-being, self-sufficiency, and permanent connections.
Learning Social Skills
One of the key aspects to our residential therapy program is teaching youth how to learn important social skills. We use group settings to help youth learn how to interact with one another, and we offer immediate feedback to assist in helping them make progress in the way they socially interact.
Managing Anger and Negative Thinking Behaviors
Quite often many at-risk youth will struggle with anger and often get into a negative thinking pattern. When this occurs, it can quickly cause minor problems to escalate, leading to criminal behaviors and challenges with daily interactions. We use anger control training to help these young men learn to deal with the emotion that often causes so many problems including aggression and self-harm. We use group and individual therapy to discuss scenarios and have the youth exchange feedback to understand conflict resolution.
Learning Moral Behaviors
Students will engage in group discussions and individual scenarios to understand a morally mature view of the world. The students will learn how to listen and take other’s opinions into account before making a decision that could impact other people.
One of the ways in which we help students learn to work with others is through service-based activities. We work within the community to find opportunities for the students to make an impact. From assisting in elderly care to physical labor working on trails or within work-related settings, we teach students valuable skills to help them learn service and how to be trusted by other people. We want our students to learn how to understand empathy for others, and learn how to become a valuable asset to their community.
